iPad 2 jailbreak will probably be released today

iPad 3 Jailbreak July 6, 2011 0

The website JailbreakMe.com was updated yesterday to show Apple typical “We’ll be back soon” post-it note used when new products are added to the Apple store. This was enough to make everyone believe that the much awaited jailbreak solution for iPad 2 would be released yesterday. As you know, the iPad 2 still does not have a publicly available jailbreak solution even though it was released almost 4 months ago.

But it has already been 24 hours and the yellow post-it note is sticking. In fact a few minutes ago, @comex tweeted “and back down, because something is screwed up”, immediately followed by a @MuscleNerd tweet that read “everyone look over here while some things get fixed”. Could we see an iPad 2 jailbreak today or will we have to wait a few days, who knows. So many promises have been made, it’s hard to believe anything.

It’s safe to say we are closer to an iPad 2 jailbreak than ever before. The series of events that unfold these few days are a sure sign of it. This weekend, a young computer scientist was able to break into one of @comex’s sites an unfinished beta of the jailbreak was leaked to the internet. An email conversation was subsequently leaked of @comex and the leaker, @comex saying that it would “probably be released today”.

Here is an other indication that we are close. A few hours ago, @comex tweeted and urged people to upgrade their versions os iOS to 4.3.3 saying that 4.3.1 and 4.3.2 would not be supported. He then tweeted that support for those versions and 4.2.1 would probably come in the future. The call to upgrade is of course to ensure users who wish to jailbreak have the right version of iOS installed on their iPad’s in case (and it will probably happen soon) Apple releases iOS 4.3.4 to patch the security hole in 4.3.3 which allows the iPad 2 to be jailbroken.

Finally, @MuscleNerd leaves us with this though in a tweet a few minutes ago : “the last few days have shown (behind the scenes) that leaks really do have consequences”. This weekend’s leak has obviously put a lot of pressure on iPad jailbreak developers to ramp up efforts and speed up the release before Apple patches the hole. Perhaps the leak was a good thing in the end. Who knows how long we would have waited had that not happened.
